This very HOT Texas weather we’ve been enjoying / enduring? over the past few weeks has focused my mind on sweet, cooling treats at the end of the day. A little bit of experimenting with our jams, various libations and the joys of the mason jar, and we soon had a perfect trio!
For each of these three, we combined 2 tablespoons of jam with 2 shots of spirits and the juice of half a lemon in a mason jar. Our Old Austin Apricot Jam combined beautifully with vodka, Raspberry Jam with white rum, and East Texas Blueberry Jam with gin.
We screwed on the jar lids, shook vigorously, then strained and served over ice, garnishing the our blueberry gin with thyme and fresh blueberries, raspberry rum with mint and raspberries, and left apricot vodka simple and clear. All were fabulous! They take 2 minutes to prepare and are a perfect kick-off to a slightly cooler summer evening
Of course not all cocktails need be alcoholic – last summer’s Tok Tok craze for jam and Topo Chico highlighted the infinite number of delicious mocktails that can be made by simply combining sparkling waters, ice and jam. Adding in a few squeezes of lemon plus a simple sugar syrup turns that into a fabulous flavored lemonade. Of course, if you’d like to add in a spirit of your choice, you’ll have another very tasty, more diluted cocktail to the options above, Yum!
Sticking with the sparkling, and back into cocktails, adding our Fredericksburg Peach Jam to Prosecco makes a delicious bubbly treat. Just combine 1 heaped teaspoon of the jam with prosecco, stir and you’re ready to go. Some of the jam will settle slightly, but that doesn’t diminish the taste one bit.
So that’s it for summer ideas – some fabulous fall cocktail features will follow soon! In the meantime, here’s a look at some of my constant photography joys and challenges – our ever-present feathery friends who are always VERY curious whenever the jams and salsas appear.
